There is a single continuing written assignment this semester. It has several stages and deadlines.

Specifications

In this assignment, you will build an area of specialized knowledge about twentieth-century Europe. Your review list is set out by decade, with links to "social impactors" in green at the top of each decade. You will specialize in ONE decade (you can focus on a single artist in detail, or several, as you see fit - but declare and explain this when you register your topic). To put that decade of art in context, check out the social impactors for that decade and for the one before it. Then you will write a 2000 word paper with annotated bibliography and/or web reference list. You can negotiate the details of the paper, but think in terms of setting the art in context and noticing how long it takes for artists to react to the social impactors. If you think important ones are missing, introduce them yourself.

1. Deadline September 8th
   You should choose your area of study and register it with me by this date.

2. Deadline October 12th
   Give me a draft paper introduction, list of key works to be discussed, and annotated bibliography.

3. Deadline Thanksgiving Break
   Before you leave for Thanksgiving, leave me a well-worked, almost-final draft of the whole paper.

4. Deadline 14th December (last class)
   Submit the final, gradable copy of your paper, complete with bibliography and any illustrations you consider necessary (if they are in the course book, you don't need them, otherwise you probably do).
